Plant morphogenesis: Designing leaves

چکیده

Leaves exhibit a wide range of form and function: as well as the flattened photosynthetic organs we are most familiar with, modifications of leaf morphology produce the rigid spines of cacti, the cup-shaped insect traps of pitcher plants, colorful flower parts such as petals and some of the tendrils used for attachment by climbing plants. One fundamental choice in leaf architecture is whether to be simple or compound (see Fig. 1a–c). Simple leaves can have simple shapes — such as round, oval or strap-like — or they can be lobed, like an oak leaf. In contrast, compound leaves are subdivided into smaller units called leaflets.

A Developmental Model for Branching Morphogenesis of Lake Cress Compound Leaf

Lake cress, Rorippa aquatica (Brassicaceae), is a semi-aquatic plant that exhibits a variety of leaf shapes, from simple leaves to highly branched compound leaves, depending on the environment. Leaf shape can vary within a single plant, suggesting that the variation can be explained by a simple model. In order to simulate the branched structure in the compound leaves of R. aquatica, we implemen...

The leaf index: heteroblasty, natural variation, and the genetic control of polar processes of leaf expansion.

The morphology of the leaves of angiosperms exhibits remarkable diversity. One of the factors showing the greatest variability is the leaf index, namely, the ratio of leaf length to leaf width. In some cases, different varieties of a single species or closely related species can be distinguished by differences in leaf index. To some extent, the leaf index reflects the morphological adaptation o...

Comparative Digital Gene Expression Analysis of the Arabidopsis Response to Volatiles Emitted by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens

Some plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) regulated plant growth and elicited plant basal immunity by volatiles. The response mechanism to the Bacillus amyloliquefaciens volatiles in plant has not been well studied. We conducted global gene expression profiling in Arabidopsis after treatment with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42 volatiles by Illumina Digital Gene Expression (DGE) profili...

Auxin influx importers modulate serration along the leaf margin

Leaf shape in Arabidopsis is modulated by patterning events in the margin that utilize a PIN-based auxin exporter/CUC2 transcription factor system to define regions of promotion and retardation of growth, leading to morphogenesis. In addition to auxin exporters, leaves also express auxin importers, notably members of the AUX1/LAX family. In contrast to their established roles in embryogenesis, ...

Balancing division and expansion during maize leaf morphogenesis: analysis of the mutant, warty-1.

Cell division and expansion are growth events that contribute to the developing shape, or morphogenesis, of a plant. Division and expansion are coordinated to the extent that plant organs, such as leaves, generally portray a predictable cellular pattern. To dissect the relationship between division and expansion, and to test for the role of each during morphogenesis, we have identified a recess...
